The Meaning Comes Later is a  pop-up exhibition of oil paintings by Ignite Studios resident artist Mayra Castro, exploring landscape and abstraction, reflecting on longing, nature, and emotional distance.

Mayra says:

My artwork focuses on landscape and abstraction, either based on reality, imagination, or memory.  There is a recurrent use of expressive color and dynamic compositional structure in my paintings, I seize on these tools to help me find a narrative and reflect on ideas of longing, nature, and emotional distance.

This body of work has been developed in 2024 with a mindset of exploration, openness, and acceptance as a process of discovery. As an emerging artist I gave myself permission to dive in to the making, putting aside any preconceptions of meaning, which has given me the freedom to let these images come to me.

Mayra Castro is a painter, photographer, animator and filmmaker of Chilean and Mexican heritage, based in the Northern Rivers for the past seven years, and currently working from Ignite Studios.

Join Mayra for the opening of her exhibition on Wed 12 June, 5.00pm – 7.00pm.
