Ignite Studios Artist Residency  |  June - September 2022

Aunty Tania Marlowe is a proud Bundjalung Nyangbal woman, fibre artist and educator. She is passionate about teaching the arts of natural fibre weaving, and sharing her connection to country, community and culture. Alongside Debra Cole, Tania is one of the founding members of local weaving collective Jugan Dandii, well-known across the region for their gentle, restorative weaving circles and community work.

In 2021 Tania was commissioned by Ballina Shire Council to create a series of woven sculptural works as part of the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport upgrade, to be installed in the airport’s arrival terminal in early-2023. When the severe flooding eventof 2022 displaced some of Tania’s family members, she found herself with a full house, and little time or space to work on the commissioned pieces.

NRCG provided a subsidised residency for Tania at Ignite Studios, to support the completion of her commissioned works, and throughout June – September 2022 made of studio spaces available.

During this time, NRCG produced a series of healing weaving workshops for flood-impacted community members, delivered by Jugan Dandii (Tania Marlowe and Debra Cole), withsome of the works produced by the community incorporated into the final piece. commissioned artwork.

The final commissioned artwork produced by Tania, Djandamandi Jagun - Garrima Jagun, welcomes visitors arriving in Ballina and the weavings highlight the importance of paying respect and recognising the significance of Aboriginal cultural heritage in our region.
