This year NAIDOC theme  ‘Because of her, we can!’ celebrates the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made - and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. 

 

For NAIDOC 2018 Arts Northern Rivers partnered with Bunjum Aboriginal Corporation to produce a series of large-scale portraits of female Elders from Cabbage Tree Island. The stunning photographs taken on Cabbage Tree Island acknowledge the Elders significance to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal culture. Each portrait is accompanied by stories told by the Elders providing insight and capturing important oral histories from the region. 

 

Alongside the photographic exhibition Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists with a strong cultural connection to Cabbage Tree Island in Ballina have created work exploring the NAIDOC theme ‘Because of her, we can!’
