The Alice Springs Beanie Festival | Colours of the Country III
11 May - 19 June 2016
Dive head first into the world of colourful, unique beanies at Colours of the Country III, the third touring exhibition of the Alice Springs Beanie Festival. Presented by Artback NT and showing nationally until August 2017, the exhibition includes audio descriptions for those who are visually impaired.
Colours of the Country III encapsulates the whimsical essence of the Alice Springs Beanie Festival, which first began in 1997. An opportunity for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists to come together to share their culture, the Beanie Festival is distinct in its aims to develop Aboriginal women’s textiles, cross-cultural exchange and showcase the beanie as a regional art form.
Featuring works from artists all over Australia, this exhibition also highlights pieces produced by Indigenous artists from across the remote Central Desert region. These artists have entwined their own textile practices through the inclusion of seeds, various fibres and embellishments to create patterned, distinct beanies.
Audio descriptions for 12 of the works on display are accompanying the exhibition on tour. Delivered via MP3, visitors who are visually impaired are treated to descriptive portrayals of textures, designs and motifs featured in the beanies as specially trained exhibition translators weave their way through the artworks.
Launch Event: Thursday 12 May 2016 | 5.30pm - 7.30pm
